Intergenerational solidarity: A review of three theories and their evidence

چکیده

In this paper, I will review the literature on solidarity between generations within the family. The concept refers to exchanges between parents and their grown-up children. Formally, we can define solidarity as doing something for someone else that is a benefit to the other (and according to some defintions, also a cost to you). The more specific focus is on the degree to which children provide support to their elderly parents and vice versa. Hence, the focus is on support in both directions.
